About Alexander Pope

Michael Dahl · Public domain

English poet · 1688 – 1744

Alexander Pope was barred from university and public office as a Catholic, and permanently disabled by childhood tuberculosis of the spine. He made himself financially independent by subscription translations of Homer — the first English poet to live on his writing alone. He wrote in heroic couplets of ferocious polish and used them to settle scores. More of his lines have entered the language as proverbs than anyone's except Shakespeare's.

Known for: The Rape of the Lock, Messiah, Eloisa to Abelard
