Anatole France was the most honoured French writer of his day — novelist, satirist, and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. He wrote elegant, sceptical fiction about belief and injustice, took a public stand for Dreyfus, and moved steadily leftward with age. The Catholic Church put his complete works on its index of prohibited books. He is quoted for his ironies, which have the particular sting of a writer who had watched respectable people behave badly.
