Antonio Porchia was born in Italy, emigrated to Argentina as a teenager after his father's death, and worked as a printer in Buenos Aires. He published one book, Voces, in 1943 — a few hundred single-sentence aphorisms — and spent the rest of his life adding to it. The lines are short, paradoxical and unusually quiet. Borges admired them, and a French edition brought them to the surrealists. He is one of the few aphorists whose work resists being made into advice.
