Classical Athenian comic playwright · 448 BC – 386 BC

Aristophanes wrote comedies in Athens during the Peloponnesian War and used them to attack the people running it, by name, while they sat in the audience. Eleven plays survive — Lysistrata, The Clouds, The Frogs — full of obscenity, political satire and sudden lyric beauty. He put Socrates on stage as a charlatan, which Plato thought had helped get him killed. He is the only surviving voice of Athenian comedy at its most fearless.
