Ancient Greek philosopher and polymath · 384 BC – 322 BC

Aristotle studied under Plato for twenty years, disagreed with him about almost everything fundamental, tutored the young Alexander the Great, and then founded his own school in Athens. He wrote on logic, physics, biology, ethics, politics, rhetoric and poetry, and largely invented several of those as fields of study. He preferred observation to abstraction and dissected animals himself. His ethics is quoted most, because it treats virtue as a habit built by practice rather than a truth to be grasped.

Known for: Politics, Nicomachean Ethics, Metaphysics
