Benjamin Franklin was a printer, a newspaper proprietor, the inventor of the lightning rod and bifocals, the founder of a library, a fire company and a university, America's envoy to France, and a signer of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. He published Poor Richard's Almanack for twenty-five years, filling it with maxims he mostly adapted from older sources and improved. He also owned enslaved people for years before becoming a public abolitionist late in life.
