British writer, lay theologian, and scholar · 1898 – 1963

C. S. Lewis fought in the First World War, taught medieval literature at Oxford and then Cambridge, and converted from atheism in his early thirties — partly through argument with his friend Tolkien. He then wrote for three audiences at once: scholarly criticism, popular Christian apologetics in Mere Christianity, and the Narnia books for children. A Grief Observed, written after his wife's death, is the least consoling and probably the best of them.

Known for: The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters
