Carl Sandburg worked as a milk-cart driver, a soldier and a journalist before publishing the Chicago poems that made his name — free verse about industrial America in the language people actually used. He also collected American folk songs, performed them with a guitar, and wrote a six-volume life of Lincoln that won a Pulitzer. He won another for the poetry. He is quoted for lines about work, cities and fog.
