About Charles Dickens

Portrait of Charles Dickens
Jeremiah Gurney · Public domain

English writer and journalist · 1812 – 1870

Charles Dickens was twelve when his father went to debtors' prison and he was sent to work in a blacking factory, and he wrote about it, in one form or another, for the rest of his life. He published his novels in monthly instalments, performed them to huge audiences, campaigned about sanitation and schools, and made social reform commercially successful. His characters are quoted more than his narration — which is fair, since he wrote them to be spoken aloud.

Known for: The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol
