Dag Hammarskjöld was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 until he was killed in a plane crash over what is now Zambia in 1961, en route to ceasefire talks in the Congo. He invented UN peacekeeping in its modern form and defended the office's independence against both superpowers.
