American author · 1899 – 1985

E. B. White wrote for The New Yorker for more than fifty years, largely defining its house voice, and produced three children's books including Charlotte's Web. He also revised his old professor's style guide into The Elements of Style, which has bullied American prose towards clarity ever since. He wrote about a Maine saltwater farm, about the atom bomb, and about the fate of the English language with the same unhurried attention.

Known for: The Elements of Style, Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web
