About Friedrich Nietzsche

Portrait of Friedrich Nietzsche
Friedrich Hermann Hartmann · Public domain

German philosopher · 1844 – 1900

Friedrich Nietzsche was made a professor of classical philology at twenty-four, resigned a decade later in poor health, and wrote his major books while wandering between boarding houses in Switzerland and Italy. He announced the death of God as a diagnosis rather than a boast, attacked conventional morality as the resentment of the weak, and wrote in aphorisms that resist summary. He collapsed into insanity at forty-four. His sister then edited him into a nationalist, which took decades to undo.
