Henry Adams was the great-grandson of one American president and the grandson of another, and wrote as a man conscious of arriving after the interesting part. He produced a nine-volume history of the early republic, a novel published anonymously, and The Education of Henry Adams, an autobiography written in the third person about his own failure to be educated for the century he found himself in. It won a posthumous Pulitzer.
