American philosopher · 1817 – 1862

Henry David Thoreau built a cabin on Emerson's land at Walden Pond and lived there for two years, keeping accounts, growing beans and writing a book about what a life costs when you strip it down. He spent a night in jail for refusing a tax that funded slavery and the Mexican war, and wrote Civil Disobedience about it — an essay that later reached Gandhi and King. He surveyed land for a living and knew the woods around Concord better than anyone.

Known for: Walden, Civil Disobedience
