English polymath · 1819 – 1900

John Ruskin was the most influential art critic of Victorian Britain, championing Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites, and then spent his later career arguing that you could not separate the quality of a society's art from the conditions of its work. He gave away most of his inherited fortune on schemes to prove it. His writing on labour and value influenced the founders of the British labour movement, and Gandhi cited him directly.

Known for: Modern Painters, The Seven Lamps of Architecture, The Stones of Venice
