Leonardo da Vinci was apprenticed to a Florentine painter and finished remarkably few pictures, among them the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. The notebooks are the larger achievement: some seven thousand surviving pages, mirror-written, on anatomy, water, flight, gears and optics, most of it unpublished for centuries and so influencing nobody.
