Mohandas Gandhi trained as a barrister in London, spent twenty years in South Africa developing mass non-violent resistance against racial laws, and returned to India in 1915 to lead the independence movement. He spun his own cloth, walked two hundred and forty miles to make salt in defiance of a British monopoly, and fasted repeatedly against communal violence. He was assassinated in 1948, months after independence. His method reached Martin Luther King Jr. and, through him, most protest movements since.
