Maya Angelou worked as a streetcar conductor, dancer, journalist in Ghana and coordinator for Martin Luther King Jr. before publishing I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1969 — an account of a childhood in the segregated South, including the rape she survived at seven and the years of silence that followed.
