Irish writer · 1854 – 1900

Oscar Wilde was the most quotable man in London for about a decade: a novel, a handful of essays, and four comedies of which The Importance of Being Earnest is the most perfect. He then sued the Marquess of Queensberry for libel, lost, and was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labour. He died in Paris at forty-six, broken and broke. The epigrams are still funny; knowing how the story ends makes several of them read differently.

Known for: The Importance of Being Earnest, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Canterville Ghost
