Ancient Greek philosopher · 427 BC – 347 BC

Plato was a young Athenian aristocrat when the city executed his teacher Socrates, and much of his life's work reads as an answer to that. He founded the Academy, wrote philosophy as drama rather than treatise, and put forward the theory that the world we perceive is a shadow of a more real order. Almost every later Western philosopher is arguing with him somewhere. He is quoted for the allegory of the cave, and for lines his character Socrates says that Plato may well have written himself.

Known for: Crito, Euthyphro, Phaedo
