About Robert Louis Stevenson

Henry Walter Barnett · Public domain

Scottish novelist and poet · 1850 – 1894

Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island, Kidnapped and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde while chronically ill for most of his adult life, chasing climates that might let him breathe. He eventually settled in Samoa, took an active part in local politics, and died there at forty-four. Long dismissed as a writer for boys, he was reclaimed by later novelists who noticed how good the sentences are. His essays on travel and idleness are the most quotable thing he wrote.

Known for: Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
