About Virginia Woolf

Portrait of Virginia Woolf
George Charles Beresford / Adam Cuerden · Public domain

English modernist writer · 1882 – 1941

Virginia Woolf helped invent the modern novel in Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse and The Waves, following consciousness rather than plot. She and her husband ran the Hogarth Press, printing Eliot and Freud by hand. A Room of One's Own made the material case for women's writing — money and privacy before genius. She had recurring severe mental illness through her life and drowned herself in 1941. Her essays are quoted almost as often as her fiction.
