Irish poet and playwright · 1865 – 1939

W. B. Yeats helped found the Abbey Theatre and the Irish literary revival, served as a senator of the new Irish Free State, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923. He also spent decades on occultism and an elaborate private system of history set out in A Vision. Unusually, his poetry got harder and better as he aged. The Second Coming, written after the First World War, is quoted every time anything goes wrong anywhere.
