William Faulkner set most of his work in an invented Mississippi county and wrote it in long, recursive sentences that refuse to let the past stay past. The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom! are the difficult ones; he also wrote Hollywood screenplays to pay for the farm. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949 and used the acceptance speech to say something about endurance that is now quoted far more widely than any of the novels.
