Ancient Greek storyteller · 620 BC – 564 BC

Aesop is less a biography than a tradition. Ancient sources describe an enslaved storyteller in sixth-century BC Greece, but the fables gathered under his name accumulated over centuries and across cultures. What holds them together is a method: put the argument in the mouths of animals, let the story do the work, and state the lesson only at the end. The tortoise, the fox and the grapes, the boy who cried wolf — they survive because a good fable is the shortest possible route to a moral.
