AnonymousUnknown author · Public domain

German-born diarist and Holocaust victim · 1929 – 1945

Anne Frank was thirteen when her family went into hiding in a concealed annexe in Amsterdam in 1942. She kept a diary there for just over two years, editing it herself with an eye to publishing after the war. The family was betrayed; she died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen at fifteen. Her father, the only survivor, published the diary in 1947. She is quoted for hope, though the diary is sharper than its reputation — funny, self-critical, and impatient with the adults around her.
