Anton Chekhov trained as a doctor and kept practising, often for free, while becoming the writer who taught modern fiction how to end without a moral. His stories and plays — The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard — refuse melodrama; people talk past each other, hope quietly, and go on. He died of tuberculosis at forty-four.
