About Christopher Marlowe

Portrait of Christopher Marlowe
anonymous · Public domain

English playwright and poet · 1564 – 1593

Christopher Marlowe was born the same year as Shakespeare, wrote Doctor Faustus and Tamburlaine, gave English drama its first genuinely muscular blank verse, and was stabbed to death in a Deptford lodging house at twenty-nine in circumstances still argued over. He had probably worked as a government agent. What he left is a handful of plays about overreachers who want everything and are destroyed by getting it — and lines of an ambition that his contemporaries had to answer.

Known for: Edward II, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta
