Ancient Greek philosopher · 535 BC – c. 470s BC

Heraclitus wrote in sixth-century BC Ephesus, in fragments so compressed that antiquity nicknamed him the Obscure. About a hundred of them survive, quoted by later writers. His claim is that reality is process rather than substance — the river you step into is not the same river, and the tension between opposites is what holds things together. Almost every fragment is quotable, which may be deliberate: he seems to have written to be remembered rather than to be followed.
