French existentialist philosopher · 1905 – 1980

He wrote philosophy, novels and plays, edited an influential journal, fought in the Resistance, and declined the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964. He is quoted for the bleak formulations, though the point of the bleakness was to remove every comfortable reason for not acting.
