John Keats trained as an apothecary-surgeon, abandoned it for poetry, and wrote nearly everything he is remembered for in a single extraordinary year before dying of tuberculosis in Rome at twenty-five. The odes — to a nightingale, to autumn, on a Grecian urn — are among the most concentrated poems in English. His letters are almost as celebrated as the verse, particularly his idea of negative capability: the capacity to stay in uncertainty without grabbing for an answer.
