anonymous · Public domain

English poet and civil servant · 1608 – 1674

John Milton spent his best years writing political prose for the English republic, defending divorce, a free press and the execution of a king. He went blind in his forties and composed Paradise Lost by dictation, after the Restoration had made him a defeated man in danger of his life. The poem set out to justify God's ways and produced literature's most magnetic Satan. He is quoted for the grandeur, and for Areopagitica, still the sharpest argument against licensing what people may read.

Known for: Paradise Lost, Areopagitica
