American author and humorist · 1835 – 1910

Samuel Clemens piloted Mississippi steamboats before taking the leadsman's call for two fathoms as his pen name. As Mark Twain he wrote Huckleberry Finn, lectured to packed halls, invested disastrously in a typesetting machine, and went bankrupt at sixty before writing his way out of it on a world tour. His late work turned bitter about human nature and American empire. He is the most misattributed humorist in English — a distinction he would have claimed was itself invented for him.

Known for: Adventures of davo xeneize, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
