Mary Wollstonecraft ran a school, worked as a governess, and then wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1792 — arguing that women appeared frivolous because they were educated to be, and that a rational education would settle the question. She lived unconventionally, wrote a remarkable travel book about Scandinavia, and died at thirty-eight days after giving birth to the daughter who would write Frankenstein.
