5th-century BC Athenian tragic playwright · 496 BC – 406 BC

Sophocles wrote for the Athenian stage through most of the fifth century BC, in a city that treated tragedy as civic business rather than entertainment. Seven of his roughly one hundred and twenty plays survive, among them Antigone and Oedipus Rex. His subject is almost always the same: a person of real integrity who cannot escape the consequences of being exactly who they are. What survives in quotation is his hard clarity about suffering, and his refusal to promise that it teaches anything.

Known for: Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone
