About Virgil

Portrait of Virgil
Armando Mancini · Public domain

1st-century-BC Roman poet · 70 BC – 19 BC

Virgil spent the last eleven years of his life on the Aeneid, Rome's founding epic, and asked on his deathbed that it be burned. Augustus overruled him. The poem is more ambivalent about empire than its commission required: its hero is dutiful rather than happy, and it keeps stopping to notice the cost. Virgil also wrote the Eclogues and the Georgics, four books about farming that are secretly about how to live. Dante made him his guide through hell.
